The Gutter

If this review feels indecisive, that’s because excellent music can rarely be described both well and straightforwardly. We live in a culture where artists are rewarded with gigs, grants and positive reviews when their music can be described in simple and interesting terms. Artists whose music is clearly about one thing or another possess a distinct advantage. In the midst of this, U.S. Maple and their fans have collected simple, crisp terms to describe the band’s music, going on about “deconstructing” and “reorganizing.” “

Charlie Wilmoth, for Dusted, on the band U.S. Maple, and incidentally, why Wavves and Best Coast are popular.

The Skygreen Leopards

—Robber's Lace

The Skygreen Leopards (LIVE)

Featuring the hits from Gorgeous Johnny, Life and Love in Sparrow’s Meadow, and Disciples of California, along with a cover of The Dil’s “It’s Not Worth It”

Preview “Robber’s Lace” for an idea of what you’re dealing with here. I prefer that live version to the recorded one (which is still great).

Recorded by Sean McCann and Stewart Adams at The Bottom Of The Hill In San Francisco, CA on October 09, 2008

Lightning Bolt live at the Living Room in Goleta, CA on August 6, 2002. Part of “OOPS the tour” featuring Arab on Radar and The Locust.

Recorded by myself and a friend on a Hi-8 camera, transferred to VHS, stored in an attic for 8 years, then digitized for your enjoyment.

It’s hard to stomach that almost a decade has passed since this recording, back when music was good, the threat level was orange, and everything smelled nice.
